FiringSquad Looks at Intel Pentium 4, Uses ABIT TH7II-RAID .

Taipei, Taiwan, R.O.C. August 27th, 2001-Intel has released the new P4 processor. The tech gurus at FiringSquad quickly went to work to find out how this newest version holds up against its brethren and competitors. With the help of an ABIT TH7II-RAID they help explain everything about it.

"As witnessed by today's 2GHz Pentium 4 launch, Intel's NetBurst microarchitecture is living up to its mission of bringing high performance and clock speeds to the desktop PC…its twenty-stage pipeline performs less work per clock cycle in exchange for higher clock frequencies. While this means the Pentium 4 does less in each stage of the pipeline, in exchange the Pentium 4 can scale to higher clock frequencies much easier than its predecessor when built on the same manufacturing process."

P4 now comes in socket 423 and socket 478. What's the difference?
"…the new 478-pin processors are considerably smaller than their 423-pin predecessors. Intel has implemented this new microPGA package to cut manufacturing costs. With the new package, all excess packaging around the P4 core has been removed; leaving just enough space for the integrated heat spreader that covers the P4 core. With a smaller surface area to work with, pin density on the underside of the chip has been dramatically increased."

"Right now, there really aren't many Socket 478 motherboards on the market. ABIT's TH7II-RAID is now beginning to hit US shores… With its SoftMenu III interface, ABIT's TH7II-RAID is the most powerful P4 overclocking board currently available on the market. You see, while previous P4 motherboards supported bus speeds up to 156MHz in small increments of two or three MHz, the TH7II-RAID supports bus speeds from 100-255MHz in 1MHz increments. For overclocking, both the AGP bus and memory bus multipliers can be adjusted, just in case your RAM or video card aren't able to run at the higher bus speeds this board is capable of.
