LinuxHardware.org Looks at Pentium 4: ABIT BW7-RAID Wins "TOP HONORS"

Taipei, Taiwan, R.O.C. November 30th, 2001 - Running Linux? Want to upgrade to Pentium 4? Got SDRAM? Then this article is for you. Kris Kersey at Linuxhardware.org has written a piece on the Intel Pentium platform with RAMBUS vs. SDRAM and the effects on running Linux.

Using 3 different motherboards from 3 different manufacturers Kris laid out a systematic analysis of the boards' performance. "In all of the following tests, we have included two additional results to show the 845 chipset's performance compared to the lower Pentium 3 1GHz and the upper 850-based Pentium 4 1.7GHz. We wanted to be able to analyze the practicality of using an 845 solution."

One of the tests was with Quake III. "Here we notice several interesting things. First we see that in the low resolutions (640x480 and 800x600) that the 845 puts itself square in the middle between Pentium 3 performance (the Pentium 3 being .7GHz slower) and an equal speed Pentium 4 with RDRAM. What's even more interesting is that at 1024x768 and above that the CPU and memory combo makes virtually no difference; it's all graphics card. This is important if you're a gamer. The more expensive RDRAM may not be worth your money. Save up for a GeForce 2 GTS or higher. The ABIT board came out on top in every test verses the other two 845-based boards followed by SOYO and then Intel."

Kris first breaks down the boards and how they stack up in these categories: Linux Support / Performance
Disk Controller Performance / Stability
Layout/Design / Manual & Package Contents

The outcome- "It's fairly obvious who's king of the 845 boards. ABIT had the top scores in all but one category. Their 845 implementation is impressive and tweakers would feel right at homeā€¦"
