Taipei, Taiwan, R.O.C., September 24th, 2004 -Exploring the world of Personal Computing, The Tech Report
website recently took a look at ABIT's latest Athlon FX-53 motherboard; AV8. Here are the highlights:
Tech Rereport really liked the idea of the IDE ports are facing 90
degrees along the edge of the board "Abit has been mounting IDE ports at 90 degrees from the usual orientation
since last year's BH7, and I
quite like the change. The angled ports could make for tight fits inside some smaller ATX cases, but I've yet to encounter
an ATX case that cramped. Generally, the angled ports tend to simplify cable routing, in my experience."
Can we conclude by saying high quality
Japanese capacitors rule? "Before I wrap up the hardware side of the AV8, it's worth noting that the board uses
Japanese-made Rubycon capacitors throughout. Japanese capacitors were largely immune to the leakage problems that plagued
some cheaper capacitors several years ago, so it's comforting to have the Rubycons onboard."
Tech Report was able to achieve an impressive 260Mhz FSB overclocking on the ABIT AV8 motherboard "In testing
with the latest AV8 beta BIOS, I was able to push the board's system bus to 260MHz without running into stability problems.
With a working AGP/PCI lock, best-in-class BIOS, and a rock-stable overclock to a 260MHz bus, the AV8 certainly lives
up to its potential."
Conclusion, "There's more to the AV8 than overclocking, though. The board's uGuru-powered BIOS is also loaded
with more monitoring and tweaking functionality than any other mobo I've tested. Throw in the uGuru software suite and
a smart array of integrated peripherals, and you've got yourself a pretty sweet board."
