March 24, 2004 - With the AI7, ABIT is changing what
people expect from a 'budget' motherboard. ClubOC discovered this all
too well after putting the AI7 through a battery of tests. The editors
liked it so much, they gave the AI7 an overall score of 9 and their Recommended
Award.
ClubOC was impressed with the µGuru technology found on the AI7: "The
µGuru is a great breakthrough in overclocking technology. The ability
to change and save bios settings "on the fly" in Windows make
all but major system or RAM tweaks available without a reboot. Good job
ABIT, on giving us a useful utility we can enjoy. The other included ABIT
utilities are useful and well thought out. FlashMenu allows you to bios
flash from within Windows, is easy to use and works very well."
Here is ClubOC doing what they do best with the AI7: "ABIT has
done an excellent job with the BIOS layout. We found all the settings
we needed to get the most performance out of the AI7. Overclocking was
quite easy. We had no issue getting the AI7 up to the maximum known stable
overclock of 3562mhz on the P4 2.6c used in testing. We hit our 274fsb
with no problems using a1gb kit (2 x 512mb) of OCZ PC4200 EL Gold RAM...Overall
the AI7 is a very good overclocking board."
The
conclusion? "ABIT has done a terrific job on the AI7, based on
the Intel 865 chipset. The board's performance is within 4% of our ASUS
P4C800 Deluxe, running the Intel 875 chipset. By going with the AI7, you
will save around $80.00 and end up with the 5:4 memory ratio available
so you can re-use your PC3200/3500 RAM. Of course by using a good PC4000/4200
Dual Channel RAM kit, you can run the FSB and Memory bus at 1:1 and have
the best performance possible. All voltages including Vdimm show terrific
stability, as we had no issues with the AI7. Stability was very good;
all of our benchmarks and stability programs ran without a hitch, even
running at 3562mhz on a 274fsb...If you are looking to build a high performance
system and need a fast board running the Intel 865/875 chipset, the "Bang
for the Buck" and features on the AI7 will be hard to beat."
