Taipei, Taiwan, R.O.C. July 15th, 2003—Exploring the
world of Personal Computing, The Tech Report website recently took a look
at the mainboard that is taking the computer world by storm, the ABIT
IS7, or as they call it, the "The GATling gun"
"IT''S NOT VERY OFTEN THAT a manufacturer will totally change
the appeal of a piece of hardware with a simple software upgrade, but
ABIT manages such a feat with their 865PE chipset board, the IS7. Shortly
after receiving the board, we got a new BIOS from ABIT that included a
totally new feature called Game Accelerator Technology.
Accelerate Your Gaming
the introduction of Game Accelerator Technology in the new BIOS
really transformed the IS7, and opened up intriguing...settings that did
wonders for the performance of the board.
The default setting of the Game Accelerator is auto. This setting
will automatically detect the hardware configuration for users.
"Turbo" will improve the gaming performance and it is independent
with DDR memory modules. All users could enjoy the benefit of Game Accelerator
via this mode; no matter what kind of DDR memory module installed.
Conclusions
Setting the Game Accelerator Techonology feature aside, the IS7
is a solid Springdale board with good overclocking abilities and a couple
of nice extras, such as the Firewire support. GAT, however, basically
transforms the IS7 into a board capable of competing with Canterwood solutions.
Needless to say, this does wonders for the price/performance ratio.
GAT is an interesting feature, because it provides a substantial
performance boost with any memory, at least in Turbo mode. Even those
who aren''t interested in overclocking should enable Turbo; it''s basically
free performance with none of the potential side effects of overclocking.
Either way the IS7 is a great 865PE board at a great price, that
has a lot more kick than Intel ever wanted a Springdale board to have."
