Ziff Davis' ExtremeTech.com Builds the Legacy Free PC: Features ABIT IT7-MAX2

Taipei, Taiwan, R.O.C. September 19, 2002 - Earlier this year ABIT was the first mainboard company to release a Legacy Free mainboard, the AT7 and IT7. The MAX series represented the future of computing by eliminating legacy PS2, serial, and parallel ports. This bold step streamlined the IT7 MAX, providing for heightened performance and innovative design. The IT7 MAX replaced these legacy interfaces with state-of-the-art high-speed USB 2.0 ports - a total of 10 are possible. The IT7 MAX combined the latest cutting-edge technologies onto one platform for the ultimate high-performance desktop solution:

  • 6 USB 2.0 ports, and an on-board USB header for 4 extra USB 2.0 channels
  • 3 IEEE 1394a ports
  • 6-channel digital audio
  • S/PDIF Out
  • 10/100 LAN
  • Support for ABIT Media XP Front Panel Device
Since the release of the ABIT IT7 and AT7 for AMD processors, there have been the new releases of the IT7 MAX2 and AT7 MAX2, which are the same boards as their predecessors except for the addition of two PS2 ports (from end-user demand) and two Serial ATA connectors.

Seeing this trend in Legacy Free computing platforms, Loyd Case of ExtremeTech.com investigated further in the special article: Build It: Legacy Free PC. Loyd looks at it from different angles and explores such issues as:  The Past attempts at Legacy Free computing, Building Legacy Free Today, What the Materials will cost you, Using Serial ATA, and discussing whether or not Legacy Free will Kill DIY.

The system they set up to test was with an ABIT IT7. "The system ran very well indeed. If you want to see benchmarks using the IT7, check out our Athlon XP 2600 review. The IT7 was the Pentium 4 DDR system used in the testing"

With its already impressive feature set, the IT7 MAX2  also has 1 AGP slot and 4 PCI slots giving you great expansion possibilities, and the hardware-monitoring gauges fan speeds, voltages, and system environment temperatures, ensuring that your system is running at peak performance. Plus ABIT's SoftMenu™ III gives you the power to fine-tune your system, all from a jumperless interface, and ABIT Engineered debug LEDs and on-board power on/reset switches make troubleshooting and setup a breeze.

Finally once you get an MAX series of motherboard you can also add on the ABIT Media XP kit. "The Media XP mounts in a free 5.25" open bay, and offers readers for Secure Digital (SD), Sony Memory Stick, and Compact Flash (CF) memory cards. Additional Firewire, USB 2.0, and audio connectors grace the front panel as well. An infrared remote control rounds out the options."

For the cutting edge in DIY computing and powerful workstations or gaming stations, ABIT is at the forefront with new technology and solutions. "...Only ABIT currently offers legacy-free motherboards in the channel...however, it's encouraging to see companies such as ABIT tackle the market head-on, with innovative products that will help all of us in the evolution towards new standards."
